Blue Origin Employees Say They Don’t Think Its Rocket Is Safe, Wouldn’t Ride In It

"Blue Origin is fortunate that nothing has occurred so far."
Passing is hard

An article was recently written by a small group of former and current employees of Blue Origin, Jeff Bezos' spaceflight company.

Yesterday, we wrote about Blue Origin's shockingly sexist workplace culture. The letter also claims that Blue Origin has poor safety culture surrounding its rockets. This is an alarming conclusion. These problems are so severe that the authors claim they would not feel comfortable riding on a Blue Origin rocket if given the opportunity.

Many of us spent our lives dreaming of being able to help launch a crewed rocket into orbit and return it safely to Earth. We didn't share Jeff Bezos' excitement when he flew into space in July. Many of us instead watched with an overwhelming feeling of unease. Some couldn't bear to even watch.

Bad Vibes

The authors don't list any safety issues with Blue Origins New Shepard rockets. They describe a culture of work in which teams were overworked and had more work added to them without any reasonable budget increases or personnel.

They argue that this culture and the lack of safety regulations for commercial spaceflight, led to staff putting safety first.

Blue Origin is fortunate that nothing has occurred so far. One anonymous engineer contributed to this article. Many of the essays' authors state that they wouldn't fly in a Blue Origin car. It's no surprise that teams are often stretched to the limit.
