Officials used VAR (video assistant referees) at Hampden during Euro 2020

Next week, the Scottish Premiership clubs will meet to discuss VAR for all top-tier matches as well as the final rounds of cup competitions.

On 8 October, the Scottish FA and SPFL will host a joint video conference in Hampden.

Howard Webb, the referee of the 2010 World Cup finals, will give a presentation about the technology.

The SFA will cover the costs of training match officials.

"VAR is here for the long-term and its implementation has improved significantly in a short time, while its setup and maintenance costs have decreased," stated Ian Maxwell, chief executive of SFA.

"We are at the stage where we need to talk and agree on its inclusion into Scottish football."

VAR was added to the Laws of the Game in 2018 by the International Football Association Board and used at the World Cup that year.

It was deployed in almost 50 leagues around the globe, including four matches at Hampden Park during the Euro 2020 delayed finals.

Neil Doncaster, chief executive of SPFL, stated that "now that there has been an important bedding-in period for several leagues it is a great time to look back at the benefits" of the technology.

"We would love to hear from the fans, officials and clubs and look forward for discussions in the coming months."
