ST. LOUIS -- St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Shildt selected Adam Wainwright to start Wednesday's wild-card match against the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants.
Wainwright is 17-7 this season with a 3.08 ERA.
Shildt stated that he gets better with each game, he is a great pitcher, and he will go deep in games," Shildt told the Cardinals on Thursday.
Wainwright won 10 of his 11 previous decisions this season, with 11 quality starts.
With 28 appearances during his career, the 40-year old righthander has been to the postseason in 28 of them. He also earned the save in the World Series final against the Detroit Tigers.
Wainwright's record in postseason starts is 3-5. He will be backed up if necessary.
Shildt stated, "Everybody will have the energy to get on Wednesday," "We have two days off so it will all be hands on deck."
