These top European universities are well-known for their vibrant, youthful atmosphere and lively nightlife. They are a great place for students, but also provide residents and visitors with plenty of culture, lots of cafes and restaurants, and centuries worth of scholarly history that echo through their streets.
However, their popularity can lead to high real estate prices. Prices can rise because of student demand. You won't find a home that fits your budget in Paris, Oxford, or Heidelberg, but you will be hard-pressed to find a property.
You can still enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of larger cities but you will also find bargain homes by focusing on smaller cities. These cities also host some of Europe's oldest universities, which are over 700 years old.
Below, you can see what my researchers discovered in Europe's oldest universities cities.
Coimbra (Portugal)
Coimbra is home to Portugal's oldest university, founded in 1290. It has attracted students for centuries. It dominates both the skyline and sits majestically on a hill overlooking the old city. The buzzy atmosphere hereis a small, vibrant city full of culture, history and color.
This 1-bed, 2-bath townhouse is located in Cernache just 15 minutes from Coimbra's historic center. The house is situated on a quiet street and has an open-plan living/dining and kitchen area.
Montpellier, France
Montpellier is not as popular as its southern neighbours, despite its being in the South of France. This means that prices are lower here. Montpellier's university was established in 1289. It has one of the most prestigious medical schools in the country. Its historic centre is lined with cafes, bars, restaurants, and cafes. The city also hosts many festivals throughout the year.
This 1-bedroom, 1-bath apartment is located just northwest of the city centre. It has a fitted kitchen and bright living area that opens out onto a small balcony. A cellar is available for use and free parking is available.
Salamanca, Spain
Salamanca, Spain's oldest university, was founded in 1218. It is home to thousands of students every year. Plaza Mayor, which is regarded as the most beautiful square in Spain, was once home to a bullfighting ring. Today, it houses boutique shops, bars and restaurants. The vibrant student population, like the other universities mentioned above, gives the city a youthful and lively atmosphere with lots to do and see.
The apartment has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. It is located just across the river from the university district. The apartment also features a fully equipped kitchen, living room, and balcony. It also has an outdoor pool and a community garden. The property is furnished and ready for you to move in.
