Cardiff's win by West Brom was their first league victory since October 1974.
West Bromwich Albion won the Championship with a 4-0 victory over Cardiff City in Cardiff.
Albion was pushed ahead by Karlan Grant in the fifth minute, with a strong effort from the penalty area's edge.
Albion doubled its lead with Curtis Nelson's own goal. This was on a night where Cardiff fans booed their team off the field at full-time and half-time.
Alex Mowatt brought home a luxurious third, and Matt Phillips took home a fourth.
After their win in south Wales, Albion lead the Championship with 22 points. Cardiff fall to 16th place after a fourth consecutive defeat which prompted anger from home fans.
Mick McCarthy, Cardiff manager, was pragmatic in his approach to halting the worst run of form as Bluebirds boss. He selected five central defenders. Ciaron Brown and Mark McGuinness were used as wingbacks.
Cardiff entered this contest having lost four out of five league games, including a 5-1 defeat at Blackburn. This was one more loss than they had suffered in the 26 previous games under McCarthy. It was evident from the first exchanges that their fortunes would not change.
West Brom scored in less than five minutes. Grant was too busy on the edge of penalty area, so he was able shift the ball onto his left foot and fire into bottom corner.
Grant scored two goals in Friday's win against QPR to cap a remarkable few days. Grant had previously scored only once in 27 games.
Valerien Ismael, Baggies boss, made only two changes to his team, both in attack. Robinson was recalled as Callum Robinson, while Jordan Hugill was recalled. Robinson also saw a shot blocked, and Robinson fired wide. The visitors were much sharper throughout.
Robinson's 26-minute effort was goal-bound, but Cardiff goalkeeper Dillon Phillips kicked the ball around the post. The Bluebirds didn't manage to score until the 35th minute, when Leandro Bacuna’s header was cleared by Darnell Furlong.
Robinson tested Phillips again before the break. Cardiff's sole attempt on goal in the first period was a volley by James Collins after a Marlon pack long throw.
Within 10 minutes, Cardiff was two down thanks to a goal in which the Bluebirds failed to clear Grant's cross three times. This culminated in Curtis Nelson crashing the ball into his own net and in off the post.
This prompted an angry response from Cardiff fans, who made it clear that they were unhappy with West Brom's threat of a third. Hugill fired just wide.
Mowatt scored the third goal with 15 minutes remaining. It was a well-deserved half-volley on a night when West Brom were an elite team.
Cardiff's woeful display was over when they were caught on the break. Substitute Grady Diangana scored for Phillips, who couldn't miss from close range as Albion climbed to the top.
Mick McCarthy, Cardiff City manager, stated to BBC Sport Wales that he has no complaints about the fans. They come to support us, to see us, and to expect better performances. I understand their frustrations.
"Whether we will get back to the same form as last year, I don't know. But we'll have to try."
"We need results quickly, because confidence begins to drop and it makes it difficult for everyone."
West Bromwich Albion manager Valerien Ismael said:
"I want you to know how much I appreciate the performances and three points.
"When you are willing to make sacrifices for your family, it's performances like these that make it worthwhile. It was a wonderful evening.
"We are moving closer to my vision for this group. We must remain positive and continue moving in the right direction.
