Real Madrid 1-2 Sheriff Tiraspol: Champions League debutants snatch win

After two wins in a row, Sheriff Tiraspol is top of Group D

Sheriff Tiraspol was the surprise of the Champions League, as the competition's most inexperienced club defeated Real Madrid at Bernabeu, 13-time European champions.

With a spectacular final-minute strike, Sebastien Thill won the tournament debutants victory.

Jasurbek Yaakhshiboev's header in the first half had given the visitors the lead.

After relentless Real pressure, Karim Benzema equalized from the penalty spot. However, Thill won the final word.

It was a worthy way of clinching a historic win - the Luxembourg midfielder’s half-volley reduced the home crowd to silence as Thibaut Courtois passed it.

Real was expecting the Bernabeu to host Champions League football for the first 580 days following refurbishment, but it was not what they had in mind as their fans returned.

Instead, Sheriff players' cheers were the soundtrack of a major upset.

Real was dominant in every aspect of the game with 76% possession and 31 shots, 11 of which were on target.

Sheriff played with great composure and was ruthless when given even a slight chance of scoring - scoring twice with just three shots.

We will keep you posted.
