San Francisco Giants HR leader Brandon Belt has broken left thumb; status unclear

SAN FRANCISCO -- Giants' first baseman and home-run leader Brandon Belt is currently out of action with a broken thumb. His availability for the final week in the regular season as well as the playoffs remains uncertain.
According to the Giants, an X-ray Monday revealed the fractured bone. Belt will continue to see doctors in the coming days to create a recovery plan.

The injury is a major blow to the NL West leaders who will be playing a home series against the Diamondbacks Tuesday night, still trying to win their first division title since 2012. To begin the season's final week, the Dodgers are currently two games behind.

After being hit with a pitch while trying to square to bunt, Belt lost a 6-2 win against Colorado on Sunday.

Belt, 33 years old, is currently batting.274 and has a career-high 29 homers as well as 59 RBIs.
