Crystal Palace 1-1 Brighton & Hove Albion: Neal Maupay scores dramatic equaliser

Last update on. From the section Premier League
Neal Maupay's equalizer was nearly the last kick in the game

As Brighton took a point against Crystal Palace, Neal Maupay scored an important equaliser in injury time.

Palace thought they had scored three points, but Vicente Guaita, Palace's goalkeeper, passed the ball to Joel Veltman at the halfway line.

Veltman hit a long shot into Maupay's path, who lobbed Guaita out of the box.

Wilfried Zaha looked poised to be the hero after he scored a penalty, his eighth goal against Albion, at the end the first period. Conor Gallagher was unable to stop Leandro Trossard.

Maupay's equalizer was not enough for Brighton to top the table at the end, as it would have been if they had won.

Palace is a team whose play style has changed under Patrick Vieira this season. They will be greatly disappointed by the final, having missed opportunities to win.

Another late drama... but this time a completely different game

Wilfried Zaha scored eight more goals against Brighton than any other team.

This is the third consecutive time that this rivalry has witnessed a late game-changing goal.

Alexis Mac Allister scored in the 90th minute of last October to save Brighton's 1-1 draw. Christian Benteke scored in 95 minutes to win Palace 2-1.

Both of these games shared something: Brighton deserved the win.

In the two games, Brighton scored 45 shots and Palace with three of their four attempts.

This time, however, it was the Seagulls that were able to score a point.

Palace is a completely different team this season. They are more proactive with passing and pressing than the reactive style of attacking football that Roy Hodgson used to coach.

Palace scored more goals, touches and passes in this match than in their two previous matches.

They were deservedly in control thanks to Zaha's confident penalty. This was his fifth goal in five Selhurst Park games against Albion. Jordan Ayew missed an excellent chance to end the game when he shot wide at the end of a counterattack.

Brighton are still sixth in the Premier League, which is a significant improvement on their previous four seasons. They were all between 15th-17th.

Potter stated that not much had changed this season, other than the club's luck. Perhaps it's the lack of bad luck.

Palace played a 'Brighton-esque' football at times, particularly in the first half which they won.

Actual Brighton performed better after Steven Alzate replaced Dan Burn in the half-time. They then went to a back four. Alzate was injured 20 minutes later but the system remained.

In the second half, they had three times as many shots in the first seven minute as in the 45th. They had to wait until the 90th for another chance, with Shane Duffy going straight at Guaita.

It seemed like that was their last chance, but Maupay slipped in behind Palace defense to lift the ball above Guaita's head.
