CHARLOTTE (N.C.) -- The Carolina Panthers announced Monday that they had acquired CJ Henderson, cornerback, and a fifth-round selection from the Jacksonville Jaguars in exchange for Dan Arnold, tight end, and a third round pick.
Jaycee Horn (the Panthers' 2021 cornerback) is currently out of action with multiple broken bones in the right foot.
The Panthers loved Henderson, the ninth selection in the 2020 draft, as he was a Florida native.
This is a bold move by Carolina's 3-0 team, which leads the NFC South by one game over Tampa Bay (2-1), and New Orleans (2-1) going into Sunday's game at Dallas.
Horn, the son of ex-NFL wide receiver Joe Horn suffered the injury during the third quarter of Thursday's 24-9 win in Houston. Coach Matt Rhule confirmed that Horn had three broken bones from the noncontact injury. He would remain out indefinitely.
In an effort to improve the tight end position, Carolina signed Arnold to a 2-year contract during the offseason. In the first three games, he caught seven passes for 84 yards with no touchdowns.
Rhule's opinion of Tommy Tremble, Notre Dame's 2021 third-rounder, speaks volumes about Arnold's decision to leave. Rhule recently referred Tremble to as this year's Jeremy Chinn.
Chinn, an outside linebacker/safety, was a strong candidate to be the 2020 NFL Rookie-of-the Year.
The Panthers spent the weekend searching for Horn's replacement. ESPN reported that the Panthers also inquired about Richard Sherman, 33-year-old Pro Bowl cornerback.
Carolina has Henderson, 22 years old. Henderson is a younger option to A.J. Bouye, Rashaan Melvin are already on the roster. Carolina prefers Bouye as a nickelback.
Henderson played eight games in 2020, before groin and shoulder injuries forced him to miss the remainder of the season. After sustaining a groin injury in Week 2 against Denver, Henderson started the first two games. He missed the last week's game.
