EAST RUTHERFORD (N.J.) -- Blake Martinez, New York Giants' middle linebacker and leading tackler, suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in Sunday's 17-14 loss against the Atlanta Falcons. Multiple sources have confirmed this.

Martinez, who is also a captain of the team and the defensive signal-caller for the Giants, will be out for the rest of the season. This is a devastating blow for a Giants defense, which surrendered a game winning drive in the final seconds of Sunday's game for the second week running.

In addition to losing wide receivers Sterling Shepard, and Darius Slayton, the Giants suffered hamstring injuries. According to a source, Shepard will likely miss some time.

Martinez sustained a non-contact injury when he ran to the sideline for a tackle during the first drive. Before reaching Atlanta's Cordarrelle, Patterson, he fell awkwardly to the ground.

Martinez, 27 years old, fell facedown and was eventually helped to his feet by the trainer. He then limped off of the field with assistance from the trainer. Martinez, 27, fell facedown and began limping into the locker room. He was clearly in pain and was quickly ruled out.

After Martinez's downfall, veteran Reggie Ragland noticed an increase in snaps. Tae Crowder, a second-year inside linebacker, took over as signal-caller.

The Giants (0-3), were hopeful for better news about one of their top defensive players. Martinez was an integral part of a strong defense last year.

Coach Joe Judge stated that it was not serious after the loss. "Blake is clearly a key member of our team; as a leader, hard worker, and a tough guy, he's an obvious part of the team."

Martinez was the Giants' leading tackler with 21 in Sunday's game. After leading the team last season with 151 tackles, Martinez' first New York game was this.

This was his fourth consecutive season of at least 130 tackles. However, that streak will end with the injury in Week 3.

Martinez signed a $30.75 million, three-year deal with the Giants last season.
