Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz appeared to endorse the white nationalist conspiracy theory Tucker Carlson promoted last week on Fox News.
". ".
On Wednesday's show, Carlson adopted the "Great Replacement Theory" during a segment that attacked President Joe Biden over the Haitian migrant crisis.
Biden was accused of bringing in illegal immigrants to the country for political reasons. He falsely claimed that Biden supports open borders.
Carlson stated that Biden would like to "reduce the political power of those whose ancestors have lived here, and dramatically increase American immigration from the third world."
Carlson stated that this policy was sometimes called the great substitute for legacy Americans. It involves more obedience from people from faraway nations.
White supremacists and white nationalists have used the Great Replacement Theory to argue that people of colour are replacing white people or people with European roots.
This theory has been used to inspire violent extremists such as the El Paso Walmart shooter, who killed 23 people in El Paso, Texas in 2019, and the Christchurch mosque gunman, who also killed 51 people in New Zealand in 2019.

Carlson had previously promoted the theory on his Fox News show. His boss, Lachlan Murdoch (Fox CEO), asserted that Carlson actually denied the theory. The Fox News host has clarified his position on the matter with his latest comments.
Insider reached out to Carlson and Gaetz for clarification but they did not respond immediately.
Gaetz said in a tweet that he was defending Carlson: "The ADL [Anti-Defamation League] is a racist organization."
The Anti-Defamation League (ANO) is an international NGO that aims to "stop the defamation against the Jewish people and to ensure justice and fair treatment for all."
Fox News should fire Carlson because he endorsed the Great Replacement Theory, according to the ADL. Jonathan Greenblatt, head of ADL, called for Carlson to be fired after he promoted the theory in April.
Also, the Great Replacement Theory was used to specifically target Jewish people.
In 2017, white supremacist Unite the Right rallied in Charlottesville, Virginia. Participants marched and chanted: "Jews won't replace us."
Insider asked for comment from the ADL but they did not respond immediately.
