Giants owner John Mara booed as loss to Atlanta Falcons drops New York to 0-3 to start the season

Younghoe Koo splits up the uprights just before time runs out to give Arthur Smith his first win in his role as Falcons head coach. (0:27).
EAST RUTHERFORD (N.J.) -- This was supposed to be a celebration. Instead, John Mara, the owner of New York Giants was booed at a halftime ceremony honoring legendary quarterback Eli Manning on Sunday at MetLife Stadium.

Mara's team was losing 17-14. The Giants had won the first half but were trailing at the break, which would be their third loss in the three-week period to open the season.

Mara, who was heading to his suite in the hallway before the beginning of the third quarter, said "I would boo too." "We're 0-2, and down at half."

It was 0-3 for only the third time in five seasons. For the second consecutive week, the Giants lost a lead in the fourth quarter when Younghoe Koo made a field goal of 40 yards with just a minute remaining.

Giants fans seem to be at their boiling point. The Giants fans aren't happy with the current state of their storied franchise. It has only had one winning season in eight years. It doesn't seem like this season will reverse that trend.

Giants fans cheered on Sunday even when Evan Engram, a beleaguered tight end, was removed from the field. They are at this point in their frustration.

Engram was the leader in tight ends last season. Even though he lost a ball in Sunday's loss to the Giants, Engram was booed after he failed to catch a tip from Daniel Jones in quarter four. After that play, he ran to the sideline while the Giants changed their personnel groups. The fans cheered his departure.

"Yeah, absolutely. That was not deserved. It was a tipping ball. It could have been thrown better at the end. Jones stated that he wasn't sure if he understood what Jones meant. Jones said that Jones played hard and recovered from an injury a few week ago to get back on the field. He's a huge player for us, and will be a major contributor for us down the stretch.

Engram caught two passes for 21 yards his first game back after a calf injury which forced him to miss two weeks.

For a long time, the fans have been disgusted at Engram, 2017's first-round pick. Engram has been the symbol of their discontent. This was their first public acknowledgment of their dissatisfaction with ownership. It was evident by the volume and clarity in the boos directed towards Mara.

Afterward, star running back Saquon barkley stood up for the team owner.

Barkley stated that he didn't believe Mr. Mara was fair to him after the boos directed towards the Giants' owner. Barkley said, "He's done an amazing job."

Since the beginning of 2017, the Giants have a record of 18-49 that is the worst in the NFL. They have made it to the playoffs only once (2016) since Manning and Giants won their second Super Bowl together in 2011.

The trend seems to be heading in the opposite direction this year. The Giants are currently the only team that has not won in the NFC East.

Joe Judge insists that they will turn the tide. Last year, the Giants were 0-5 during Judge's first season as head coach. To a fan base that is difficult to convince, he preached patience.

"All right guys, we're going to make it all okay. Okay? Judge was calm as he left the stage for his post-game news conference. "We're going be all right."
