Raul Jimenez scored the Wolves' last goal in October 2020 against Newcastle in a 1-1 draw.
Raul Jimenez scored his debut goal after suffering a life-threatening fractured skull.
The Mexico forward scored the match's only goal when he took a long ball forward and showed great skill to avoid two home defenders. He finished calmly past Alex McCarthy.
Southampton had previously had the chance to open the scoring, but Jose Sa, Wolves goalkeeper denied Adam Armstrong and Valentino Livramento as well as Mohamed Elyounoussi.
Jimenez's goal was his first for Wolves since Oct 2020. The Saints had a chance to equalize but Che Adams' shot was saved. Wolves won despite home pressure.
Southampton remains without a Premier League win this season, dropping to 16th. Wolves climb above them to 13th.
Jimenez, after his skull fracture, says it's a miracle that he's still here
Jimenez enjoys the long road to recovery
Jimenez scored after a long ball from Sa, and great work to evade defenders Jan Bednarek, Mohammed Salisu. The 30-year-old was delighted and ran towards Wolves fans jumping high and shouting in delight.
After sustaining a serious injury in an accident clash of heads with David Luiz, it has taken him a long time to recover. This happened during Wolves' Premier League match against Arsenal in November 2020.
Jimenez had been given oxygen during the pitch and was then taken off to hospital. He had emergency surgery for a skull fracture and major traumatic brain injury.
Since then, he has revealed that it was a miracle to be back to playing football and he returned to pre-season action in July.
Jimenez now wears a protective helmet. He had played in all five of Wolves' league matches before scoring the goal that he wanted an hour into their victory at St Mary's.
McCarthy was able to deny McCarthy his chance of scoring his second goal in stoppage time. McCarthy had only one goalkeeper to beat.
Southampton are currently one of five Premier League sides that have not won this season. They have drawn four matches, lost twice, and have lost two.
They took more than 30 minutes to score a goal, but they finished the first half strong with Nathan Redmond scoring a goal that was ruled out as offside.
After Sa tested positive for Covid-19 in March, Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl appointed Shane Long to his first league involvement of the year. However, the Republic of Ireland striker couldn't inspire an equaliser.
What's next?
Southampton will play Chelsea in the Premier League at 15:00 BST on Saturday. Wolves will be at home to Newcastle at the time.
