At least 3 are dead and 'well over' 50 injured after an Amtrak train derailed in Montana

Multiple people were injured and killed when an Amtrak train was thrown off the tracks in Montana.

Insider was told by a spokesperson that the train carried 146 passengers and 16 staff members.

According to reports, the train was running between Seattle and Chicago.

CNN and The New York Times reported that at least three people died and 50 were injured when an Amtrak train was unable to stop in Montana.

Insider was told by an Amtrak spokesperson that seven cars were on the Empire Builder train when it derailed near Joplin at 4:05 p.m. MT. According to the spokesperson, there were 16 crew members and 146 passengers aboard the train at that time.

Amtrak is working closely with local authorities to transport the injured and evacuate all passengers. The spokesperson added that additional details would be made available as soon as they become available. Anyone with loved ones aboard should call 800-523-9101.

Social media photos showed Amtrak vehicles lying on their sides, off the tracks. Crew members, first responders and passengers crowded around them. It was not immediately clear if anyone was hurt.

KXLY, a Seattle news station reported that the train was running between Seattle and Chicago.
