Some Republicans are unsure if former NFL player Herschel will be able to defeat Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock next year in the Georgia Senate race. However, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell from Kentucky seems to have warmened up to the Heisman Trophy winner’s candidacy.

Politico reported this summer that Walker's complicated personal history was a "vulnerability" to gaining control of the Senate. The publication cited an Associated Press report which detailed the threats Walker allegedly made his ex-wife, as well as questions about his business dealings.

Walker, who has a long friendship with Donald Trump over the decades, strongly encouraged him to enter the race last month.

McConnell had earlier suggested that he would not support unelectable Trump-backed candidate, but he recently praised Walker.

There are some signs that he has had challenges in his life. However, his performances on national television have been impressive. McConnell said that his entire team revolves around [former Senator] Johnny Isakson. "He called me, we had a great conversation. There are many signs that he will be a great candidate, I believe.

Isakson was a long-standing Peach State lawmaker. He held the Senate seat Warnock currently occupies from 2005 through 2019, before stepping down due to health reasons.

Gov. Brian Kemp appointed Kelly Loeffler, a Republican, to the Senate seat. She held the seat until Warnock defeated her in January's runoff election. Democrat Jon Ossoff also lost the seat to GOP Sen. David Perdue. Warnock was elected in order to complete the term of Isakson, which expires in January 2023.

Trump will be joined by Walker Saturday at a Georgia political rally. In the evenly divided Senate, a GOP net increase of one seat would give the party majority control. McConnell's ultimate goal is to win the Senate.

However, the Republican leaders have had to deal with internal problems.

The Wall Street Journal reported earlier this week that Trump was speaking with Republican senators to try to remove McConnell from his position as GOP leader. However, with McConnell's unwavering support, it is unlikely that the effort will succeed.

They have not been able to come to terms with McConnell's harsh criticisms of Trump's behavior on the day after the Capitol insurrection. McConnell is looking to 2022, while Trump flirts with 2024, but the men will always need to cooperate in the future.

Kentucky senator who was in charge of the caucus in 2010 and 2012 when party lost in Nevada, Delaware and Missouri were not aware of the pushback that party members experienced with controversial candidates.

McConnell stated that he didn't think Sharron Angle or Christine O'Donnell, Todd Akin or Richard Mourdock were out there. He was referring to the GOP Senate nominees who lost in high-profile races. "I don’t believe there’s much chance that we’re going to end with a nominee who cannot win in November."

Walker's candidacy was questioned, but his entry has made the GOP the most prominent candidate in the race. This will be the marquee Senate race in the country.

Other Republicans in the race are Gary Black, state Agriculture Commissioner, and Kelvin King, two military veterans.
