Rangers are still at the top of the Scottish Premiership after their first win in Dundee since 2005, when Jason Cummings had missed a penalty.

After a half where both teams missed a lot of chances, Joe Aribo scored the second goal of the season to separate the sides at the break.

After Cummings' save of the second-half spot kick, Dundee extended their unbeaten run to five games.

James McPake's team is now bottom of the league, still looking for a first league victory.

After protesting to officials about the pitch, his frustration was clear at full-time. Bobby Madden sent him off.

Rangers remain ahead of Hearts at summit, despite breaking a string of two defeats, a draw, and a tie in their previous visits, Dens, as they also lost to United earlier in the season.

After Leigh Griffiths, a Dundee striker was arrested by Police Scotland for "culpable" and reckless conduct following his alleged throwing of a flare at a crowd of supporters during the St Johnstone midweek League Cup loss, a lot of attention was on Griffiths.

The striker was also on loan from Celtic. His desperate need to score was evident. He missed two good chances with headers from close range in the first minutes.

He would score two more goals, one to the near post, and another left-foot shot from the box. But Jon McLaughlin stood behind them both.

Griffiths was left frustrated and unable to continue the match after sustaining an ankle injury. He was forced to leave before half-time.

These were not the only big opportunities Dundee had. They wanted to end a four-game streak without a goal. Jordan McGhee shot straight at McLaughlin six yards away.

As is so often the case in these games, the underdogs were punished because they didn't take their chance as Aribo quickly put the champions ahead.

James Tavernier discovered Alfredo Morelos who tossed a wonderful ball in Aribo's direction and finished coolly ahead of Adam Legzdins.

Rangers were - and still are - very quiet but they did occasionally threaten to score a second goal. Kemar Roofe saved Legzdins and Connor Goldson had his goal route blocked by Morelos, his team-mate.

Dundee were testing Rangers from set-pieces, and Ryan Sweeney's head was on target. But Rangers started to gain more control. John Lundstram forced a save, and Morelos fired wide from six yards.

After Paul McMullan was caught on the leg by McLaughlin, Dundee were given a penalty. Referee Madden felt he had made an effort to win the ball, and McMullan was booked. The home team had an excellent chance to end their barren run.

Cummings' attempt to score in the centre of the goal was blocked by the goalkeeper and he was defeated as McLaughlin scored.

McGhee's header was a chance for the home team, but they are stuck at the bottom of this table due to their poor goalkeeping.

Joe Aribo is the Man of The Match

What have we learned?

Dundee couldn't have done more to end their poor run in front goal. However, it's now five games with no goals for the Premiership's bottom team and they've yet win one league match.

Rangers displayed the weaknesses that have worried fans this season, particularly from set-pieces. However, they remain at the top of the league and are in the semi-finals of the League Cup.

What's next?

Rangers travel to Sparta Prague in Europa League on Thursday (17.45 BST), and then host Hibernian in Scottish Premiership on Sunday (15:00). Next up, Dundee will be at St Johnstone (15:00 BST)
