Musk explained to the tabloid that the couple split partly due to work. Musk stated that his roles at SpaceX or Tesla required him in Texas or overseas most of the time while Grimes, who is Claire Boucher's real name, has her music career in Los Angeles. Musk stated that they are still good friends and are currently working together to raise their son, X A-Xii Musk. Musk referred to Musk as Baby X to Page Six. Musk stated that despite their split, they still love one another, and added that Grimes was staying at Musk's house with their son during the Page Six interview.

After allegedly meeting via Twitter, Musk and Grimes made their first public appearance together at the Met Gala in May 2018. Musk had planned to tweet a pun involving Rococo, a thought experiment called Roko’s basilisk, but Grimes had defeated him years ago, creating Rococo Basilisk in a 2015 music video.
