Nintendo Resurrects N64 and Sega Genesis Controllers for the Switch

Tonight's Nintendo Direct presentation focused on games, with a questionable Super Mario movie casting decision. However, Nintendo also announced an expansion pack for Nintendo Switch O nlines retro gaming collection that includes N64 and Sega Genesis games. The company will also release Sega Genesis and N64 controllers for those looking for a more authentic retro gaming experience.

The Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, which will launch in April, will add a few N64 games to its service. These include classics like Super Mario 64 or The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Timegames. This pack helped usher the age of 3D graphics with analog controls. Unfortunately, the GoldenEye:007 is still not in stock. Sega Genesis games like Sonic, Ecco the Dolphin and Castlevania Bloodlines will be brought to the Switch by the Expansion Pack. Although the expansion will be available in October, it will also be available as part of a more costly membership plan. However, Nintendo has not yet revealed any pricing details.

Nintendo will release a pair wireless Bluetooth controllers for Switch along with the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. The Sega Genesis 16-bit controller and the N64's original controller will cost $50 each. They will be only available to Nintendo Switch Online subscribers and, presumably, those who purchase the new expansion pack. It is not clear if the N64 controller will inherit drift issues from the Switchs Joy-Cons, but the updated controller will likely use similar hardware.

Nintendo also brought Shigeru Miyamoto to the event to reveal details about its animated Super Mario movie, which is due to arrive in theaters in 2022. Charles Martinet will be the film's voice actor, although he won't be actually voicing Mario. For some reason, Nintendo decided Chris Pratt was a better choice. Pratt will join The Queens Gambits Anya Joy Taylor as Princess Peach and Jack Black as Bowser. Seth Rogan is Donkey Kong's Donkey Kong. Charlie Day as Luigi. Although we are cautiously optimistic about the casting choices for the movie, Nintendo hasn't had a great track record in bringing its properties to the big screens.
