At Thursday's Nintendo Direct event, Miyamoto Shigeru, an internationally acclaimed videogame designer, announced that Illumination, the company's next feature-length animation project, has been given a North American theatrical release date of December 21, 2022.

Although release dates for Japan, Europe and other markets are yet to be announced, Miyamoto shared the key casting decisions of the studio. Chris Pratt will play Mario. Miyamoto said, "He's so cool." Anya Taylor-Joy will play Princess Peach in Netflix's hit series Queen's Gambit, while Charlie Day from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia will voice Luigi. Jack Black will be the voice of series villain Bowser while Keegan Mike-Key has been cast to play Toad. Seth Rogan will also be appearing in the film as Donkey Kong. Charles Martinet, a long-time voice actor who has played Mario and his cohort in many games, will be returning to the company to provide cameos throughout this film.
