Seattle Seahawks WR DK Metcalf vows to keep emotions in check, tune out opponents' smack talk

RENTON, Wash. -- DKMetcalf believes that opponents are trying to get him to lose his cool more often than they did during the 2020 Pro Bowl season.
The wide receiver for the Seattle Seahawks says he needs to be better at not biting.

Metcalf replied Thursday that he was certain when Metcalf was asked if defenders were trying to get in his head and take him out of the game. They can't stop Tyler [Lockett] in any other way. They can only try to talk to me, which is the best thing they can do.

Or, he put it more colorfully when he was asked about the teams that were doing different against him in Year 3. "Talking s ---.." That's all.

Metcalf has had several chippy moments between defenders during the two games. Some of these incidents lasted until the end. Metcalf has also been flagged four more times, one for taunting following a Seattle touchdown in quarter two. The Seahawks were forced to retreat 15 yards after the kickoff. This allowed the Indianapolis Colts, who started a drive that ended in a touchdown at the 32.

Coach Pete Carroll stated that "he was really jacked for both of them, early in the games, and tried too hard to have an impact." He's on his way. He is so ready to do it, and he's finally finding his way. He was going a bit too far and he had to pay some penalties.

Metcalf agreed to Carroll's assessment.

He said, "He's absolutely right." "I am an emotional person. I have a competitive edge. I don't want to lose any argument, route or other thing. So, I will just compete my guts off... get near the line but not cross it."

What is his secret?

He said, "Knowing yourself and understanding that they're trying get to me and trying get me to cross that border," "But there is a greater prize at the end, so don't fall into the trap. It's not about me playing for myself, but for the team.

Metcalf admitted that last week's overtime loss to the Tennessee Titans saw Metcalf fall into this trap. He was flagged for pass interference and a hold on a screen to Chris Carson. Another hold was declined on a screen for receiver Freddie Swain.

Ten penalties were committed by the Seahawks for 100 yards against Tennessee. This was one of the reasons they lost a 15 point halftime lead.

Carroll stated that Carroll is figuring out where the limits are to be played within. He's so physically strong that he can overwhelm a man at times. So he must know what the officials are saying and when to let his guard down. I can accept what he is trying to do. He is fighting and competing, but it must be done within the guidelines.

After last week, this message is crucial for the whole club. There were some things that happened that weren't necessary. We gave away a lot of yards in situations we need to improve on, and it was after the play had ended. He was part of that."

Seattle was penalized for a further taunting offense, this time by D.J. cornerback. Reed. Carroll stated this week that the league has "opened up quite a few cans of worms" with its new emphasis on the enforcement of the taunting rule.

Metcalf said: "The game is evolving, so we must, too."

Metcalf has ten catches on 16 targets, totalling 113 yards and one touchdown in two games. After going the first half without a target, his fourth quarter score was his. Lockett has now scored three touchdowns and is second in the NFL with 278 receiving yard, a new franchise record.

Metcalf stated, "Last season, I was a bit frustrated when I didn’t get the ball. But when I see Tyler go for 200 or Freddie catch his first touchdown this school year, that’s just exciting for my," Metcalf added. "So long as the team is winning and we are winning, I don’t care. I want to win the Super Bowl.

Metcalf's last target against Tennessee came on the second play in Seattle's overtime three-and-out. He was too stiff from a sore knee to make Russell Wilson's throw.

After Carroll stated that Metcalf had been told by the receiver that he was okay, Metcalf was still listed as a full participant at Wednesday's practice. Metcalf also answered a reporter's question about his knee.

"My knee is strong. Are you trying to race?

Metcalf continued the lighthearted exchange by telling Metcalf that he would give him a 50 yard head start in a 100 yard race and still win.

He laughed and said, "That's how great my knee is."
