The Emmy Awards this weekend were not for geeks, but they had a great time at the Creative Emmy Awards. The Emmy for Outstanding Special Effects in a Show or Movie was awarded to The Mandalorians' second season. We now have a second look behind the CG...and in front of it.

What is it like to produce a season on The Mandalorian. There are lots of sets and bluescreens. Some robotics. Some puppets. The Volume is an insane LED rig that allows actors to film on their own sets while they are still in the studio. And, of course, there's an old-fashioned spaceship model just like the Star Wars crew used for A New Hope 44 year ago.
Richard Bluff, Visual Effects Supervisor for The Mandalorians, gives the tour. Although VFX reels such as this can be unpredictable, the videos of The Mandalorians never fail to impress. It surprises me that things that I thought were CG turn out to be real or look real. Or that things were actually made from real things and then scanned into CG. The Trash-ATs are stop motion puppets, which I love for no apparent reason. He is able to use all of these processes and VFX. This is why The Mandalorian looks and feels so Star Wars.
For a total seven Emmys, the Mandalorian won Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup and Outstanding Musical Composition for Series (Original Dramatic Score), Outstanding Music Mixing for Comedy or Drama (One Hour), Outstanding Stunt Coordinating, Outstanding Stunt Performance, Outstanding Cinematography in a Single-Camera series (Half-Hour) for a total number of seven.
