Since joining Dundee last month, Leigh Griffiths played three times

After Leigh Griffiths's apparent attempt to throw a flare into the stands of spectators during Wednesday night's 2-0 loss by St Johnstone, Griffiths apologized.

Dundee stated that a smoke generator and other items were thrown onto the field by visiting supporters after Dundee's goal in the League Cup tie's opening goal.

Police state that "enquiries continue".

Griffiths stated, "It was unfortunate that the pyrotechnic ended back in the stand because my intention was to remove it from pitch."

"Having just lost a game, I was eager to restart the match as soon as possible. I would like to apologize for any distress this caused."

Police Scotland spokesperson stated that they were aware of an incident in which a few smoke devices were left at Dens Park during Wednesday's match between St Johnstone and Dundee Football Clubs.

"There were no injuries or complaints made to the police at this time." The matter is under investigation.

Scotland forward Griffiths, who had previously played for Tayside between 2009-2011, returned to Dundee late last month on loan from Celtic.
