Aaron Connolly scores his first goal in Brighton since January
With a 2-0 win against Swansea City, Aaron Connolly scored twice for Brighton in round four of Carabao Cup.
Graham Potter made 11 adjustments to the team that started Brighton's final Premier League match. The Seagulls had a hard time achieving victory.
Championship Swansea made nine changes, but missed many opportunities as Connolly's quickfire two saw Brighton advance.
Potter's men won six of seven games this season.
It was not an easy match against Swansea. They had plenty of chances to upset them, but were a wasteful in front.
Liam Cullen was given their first chance when he turned sharply and saw a shot saved from Jason Steele by Brighton goalkeeper Jason Steele. Jason Steele then caught Rhys Williams' header, before Korey Smith nodded.
Connolly was then sent into space by Alexis Mac Allister and Steven Alzate. The Republic of Ireland international scored in the 33rd minute thanks to a deflection from Brandon Cooper.
Connolly scored his second goal just five minutes later. He cut in from the right, and shot a low shot into a corner at the end of the area.
Swansea was again in danger after the break. Smith and Cullen both hit the bar from close range while Smith was forced to save another time by Steele.
Potter was able to celebrate his victory over his former club, with Brighton almost extending their advantage after Pascal Gross's late free-kick crossed the bar.
More good news was that full-back Tariq lamptey, who had been out of action for nine months, played 45 minutes.
Graham Potter, Brighton manager:
"We are thrilled to have made it through. It was tough. There were two teams involved and Swansea contributed well. They were also fantastic, I thought.
"I am very pleased with our players. They were great. They showed respect for the opponent and worked hard. Aaron's two finishes made the difference.
"I'm really happy with him, he worked for us as well.
Tariq always had a plan for forty-five minutes. It didn't seem like a struggle for him. We will now see how he recovers."
Swansea head coach Russell Martin:
"We started the game well, pressed hard and won the ball back many times. We should have scored, there is no doubt about that.
"We don't. The intensity of the feeling drops a bit. Some fear did enter - I don’t know why. We kicked too many long shots.
"Two very poor goals to concede, which frustrates us, and we don’t score – we have five incredible chances within their box. However, I liked them, especially in the second half.
"I'm just disappointed, and they [the players] were disappointed that we haven’t at least scored two goals to make it to penalties."
