Former President George W. Bush will fundraise for Liz Cheney as Trump and GOP rivals target her House seat

However, polls show that Bush is now significantly more popular under the Trump administration.
Ford said, "This one shouldn’t be surprising," adding that Bush had "historically helped a few key candidate and friends each cycle." Bush's overwhelmingly negative approval ratings have led him to largely keep his mouth shut on electoral politics.

Freddy Ford, a Bush spokesperson, told CNBC that Bush was impressed by Liz Cheney’s strength and vision and that he is proud to support her.

Multiple outlets reported that the fundraiser for Cheney will be held in Dallas on October 18. Outlets reported that former Bush advisors Karl Rove, Karen Hughes, as well as Kay Bailey Hutchison (ex-senator and U.S. Ambassador to NATO), will be attending the event.

An upcoming fundraiser will feature former President George W. Bush as special guest. Cheney's unwavering criticisms of Trump have triggered a fierce backlash within her party.

Bush and Laura Bush, his wife, claimed they didn't vote for Trump or Hillary Clinton in 2016. Bush claimed that he wrote 2020 in Condoleezza Rice's name, his former secretary.

He spoke out following the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol and said it had "made me sick". Bush, without naming Trump, lamented that the Republican Party had become "isolationist," "protectionist, and to a certain degree, nativist."

Bush declared that violent extremists at home and abroad were "children of one foul spirit" on the 20th anniversary the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Cheney, a conservative-leaning Wyoming representative, was among 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump because he incited the Capitol riot. This handful of Republicans has been under fire from Trump's loyalists in Congress as well as Trump himself.

Ohio's Rep. Anthony Gonzalez, one of the 10, said last week that Trump was a "cancer for the country" and that he would not be seeking reelection.

Trump replied, "1 down 9 to go!"

Trump-allied Republicans from her chamber have called for Cheney to be removed from Congress. Trump officially endorsed Harriet Hageman earlier in the month, who is a primary opponent to Cheney. His endorsement of Hageman called Cheney a “disloyal Republican,” a “RINO” which is a derogatory acronym used against Republicans who are accused of being like Democrats and the number one provider sound bites.

But Cheney remains defiant.

Trump responded, "Here's an audio bite: Bring it!"

Cheney was removed from her position as No. After refusing to stop criticizing Trump's role in the Capitol riot, Cheney was stripped of her position as No. 3 House Republican.

Trump and his associates filed numerous lawsuits to overturn the results of state elections after losing the election. Trump made false claims about election-rigging to supporters at a rally outside of the White House on January 6. He then directed them toward the Capitol to press Republicans to not confirm Biden's win.

Trump was impeached by the House, but was acquitted by the Senate, which required 60 votes to convict him.

Cheney continues to engage with the Democratic House select committee that is investigating the Jan. 6 riot, despite the pressure from her colleagues.

After Senate Republicans rejected a proposal to form a bipartisan "9/11-style" commission, the House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) assembled the panel.

Cheney is one the two Republicans currently on the panel. The current seven Democratic members of that group are all Republicans. Cheney was named vice-chair of the committee by Chairman Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), earlier this month. Trump has been vocally criticised by Rep. Adam Kinzinger, an Illinois Republican.
