Max Verstappen, Red Bull, won the 2021 Monaco Grand Prix
Next season, the Monaco Grand Prix will undergo a major change in format. It will now be a three-day weekend.
Monaco traditionally has been held over four consecutive days. The first practice day was on Thursday and Friday was a free day for Formula 1 drivers and teams.
The event will be held in the same format as other races starting in 2022 to allow for flexibility in F1's schedule choices.
CNN: Stefano Domenicali, president of F1 said that Monaco would be three days away.
"So Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are now the new Thursday. Hold, then Saturday and Sunday. This is the change that we will make next year.
Monaco's glamour was built on the traditional format. Parties were held in boats at Monaco's famous harbour on Thursday night. Friday was left for guests to relax or participate in other events.
F1 plans a record 23-race schedule for 2022. This is the same year F1 had a record before coronavirus-related travel restrictions reduced the season to 22 grands prix.
The season's calendar for this season is not yet finalized. There is still one date on the 19-21 November, following the cancellation at the Australian Grand Prix. F1's first race at Qatar will likely fill this gap.
Due to the pandemic, the Grand Prix of Japan, Singapore, Canada, and China were also cancelled. F1 hopes that all of them will return in 2022.
Domenicali stated that the 2022 calendar will be revealed at a meeting by the FIA world motorcycle council on 15 October.
He stated that there was interest from Kyalami South Africa in a return of the schedule for the first-time since 1993.
Domenicali confirmed that discussions had been held with Kyalami, but the Italian also said F1 had "received additional requests from countries of Africa".
He stated, "In the moment, I must keep it confidential."
