According to reviews, the iPad mini looks more like the iPad Air mini. The two devices share many features including slimmer bezels and a USB-C port. There is also a Touch ID power switch, a 12-megapixel rear wide camera, and compatibility for the second-generation Apple Pencil. With Apple's A15 Bionic chip and Center Stage support, the new iPad mini goes beyond the iPad Air.

Federico Viticci, MacStories editor in chief, summarised it best:

Let me cut to the chase. I have been waiting for an iPad mini refresh for years and this device delivers. The new iPad mini fulfills my long-held dream of an iPad Pro/Air-like tablet in a small form factor. It offers a portable experience that is unlike any other in Apple's range.

According to Engadget's Valentina Paladino, even with the larger 8.3-inch screen, the iPad mini still offers portable convenience.

For the past week, I have had the iPad mini with me at all times. I was surprised at how simple it was to use. All iPads are portable, but some iPads are more portable than others. The 2020 iPad Pro 11-inch is mine and I can take it with me everywhere. However, it's mostly used in my home to be a secondary device, or my primary driver for travel. The iPad mini on the other hand can fit in almost any bag and provide a larger screen that is ideal for reading, watching videos, and making FaceTime calls. Although it was not difficult for me to use my thumbs to write on the mini, I wouldn't describe it as a comfortable experience.

WIRED's Brenda Stolyar expressed concerns about battery life.

Each morning, I used my iPad Mini to make To-Do lists in Notes and to monitor Sidecar on my MacBook the rest of the days. [] I used the Mini to join Zoom calls with colleagues, depending on my schedule. Unfortunately, all this activity took a toll on my battery life. It took me five hours to complete the task, which is almost enough time for a whole day. Apple allows up to 10 hours web browsing and video viewing on Wi-Fi models, while the 5G version offers nine. It hit 1% when I streamed a Netflix series with iMessage and Telegram running in the background. It won't last more than 9 hours if you don't use it often.

We were the first to report that the A15 chip in iPad mini has been lowered to 2.9GHz. This is compared to the 3.2GHz found in all iPhone 13 models. Jason Snell, Six Colors editor in chief, shared a chart with Geekbench 5, benchmark results for comparison.
