Messi seemed frustrated when Achraf Hakimi replaced him against Lyon

Mauricio Pochettino, Paris St-Germain boss, has admitted that he was injured and substituted Lionel Messi in Sunday's win against Lyon.

Messi seemed unhappy about being replaced. However, Pochettino stated that he had suffered a knock to the left knee.

The 34-year old will not be able to travel with PSG to Metz on Wednesday, and is doubtful for next week's Champions League match against Manchester City.

Pochettino claimed that he saw "Leo looking at his knee"

"We are happy with the way he played," stated the ex-T Tottenham manager. He did not mention Messi’s injury after the match on Sunday.

He played well in the first period, with the only thing lacking was a goal. After playing for 76 minutes, we decided to remove him from the match with all the information available.

"Ofcourse I understand the situation. I accept it as is."

Messi made his third appearance at PSG's Parc des Princes after he joined as a free agent from Barcelona.

Messi still awaits his first goal for PSG

The international break and fitness reasons prevented the six-time Ballon d'Or winner to make his home debut earlier. Pochettino would have been surprised if he accepted his substitution as PSG chased for the winning goal.

He said, "It's not surprising for me that the priority is always his well-being and in this instance we thought it best for him to take him out."

"All great champions want to be on the pitch, and that is understandable."

On Tuesday, the Argentine star was subject to an MRI. The results showed bone bruising. PSG stated that a follow up examination would be conducted on Thursday.

PSG are currently at the top of Ligue 1 and have accumulated a maximum of 18 points in six games. They host Montpellier on Saturday, before welcoming Manchester City to Parc des Princes on Monday.
