Apple Will Let iPhone 13 Pro Users Disable Auto Switching to Ultra Wide Lens for Macro Photography Later This Fall

Today's iPhone 13 Pro Max and iPhone 13 Pro Max review were published. The devices received praise for their smoother ProMotion screens, longer battery life, improved cameras, and more responsive interfaces. However, one complaint was common to all the reviews.

The iPhone 13 Pro Max and iPhone 13 Pro Max now have the ability to take macro photographs. Raymond Wong from Input Mag noted that this new feature allows the device to automatically switch between the Wide lens and the Ultra Wide lens if you place an object within 5.5 inches of its rear camera. The viewfinder still shows "1x" framing but the camera uses the Ultra Wide lens to focus.

As Wong demonstrated in this video, the automatic camera switching can be easily seen in the iPhone's Viewfinder.

He said that the viewfinder "continues to jitter as it attempts to decide between a regular wide and wide-macro shot." He stated that the framing should not change from what you have composed and never be changed automatically in his review.

Wong initially heard that Apple intended the automatic camera switching to improve close-up detail capture. However, Wong has received a statement from Apple stating that iPhone 13 Pro users will have the option to disable the switching in an iOS upgrade that will be released later in the fall.

Apple stated that a new setting would be included in a software upgrade this fall. It will disable automatic camera switching when taking macro photos and video at close ranges.

Apple claimed that the ability to disable automatic camera switching will also apply to macro video recording. However, Wong pointed out that there is an option called "Lock Camera" under Settings > Camera which appears to block the switching of video.

The launch of all four iPhone 13 models in stores and in U.S. will occur on Friday, September 24, in the U.S.A. and in over 30 other countries.
