Rutgers Scarlet Knights suspends two football players for incident involving paintball gun

Coach Greg Schiano announced Tuesday that Rutgers cornerbacks Max Melton (Rutgers) and Chris Long were taken into custody after an incident with a paintball gun.
NJ Advance Media reported Monday night's incident that led to the two men being charged with aggravated assault as well as possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

Melton is a starter and has had two interceptions, one blocked punt and eight tackles this year. Rutgers' first pick-6 since 2017 was Melton's interception return against Temple.

Melton, the younger brother to Rutgers wide receiver Bo Melton had been listed as a starter in the depth chart for Saturday’s Big Ten opener at No. 19 Michigan. As a true freshman, he started six of the nine contests for the team in 2020.

Long was a reserve in the first three Rutgers games, but has not been able to record any statistics.

Rutgers is now 3-0 for the first-time since 2012.
