After sustaining a left knee injury, Lionel Messi was ruled out of Paris Saint-Germain's Ligue 1 match at Metz.

Messi was substituted in PSG's win over Lyon on Sunday. The club announced that he will undergo scans following a knock.

Weekend Review: Messi is subbed, but PSG finds a way

On Tuesday, the club released the following statement: "Lionel Messi has had an MRI done this morning to confirm the signs of bone contusion. A new assessment will take place in 48 hours."

Messi, who was a free transfer from Barcelona to join the French giants this summer, has not contributed an assist or goal in four of his first matches for his new club.

Mauricio Pochettino, manager of PSG, responded to a question about Messi's current situation during a press conference: "The club has already informed Leo about his situation and it is clear."

"We knew Messi was touching his knees. He did a great job during the match against Lyon. We decided to bring him off after 75 minutes.

"Messi, like all great champions was not happy to be taken off. His commitment and performance are admirable. Although he hasn't yet scored, he performed very well."

PSG believes that the Argentina international will be absent from Saturday's league match against Montpellier, but is optimistic that he will be back for the Etihad trip.

PSG were held to an unexpected draw at Club Brugge last week in their Champions League opener.
