Netflix launches free, first-of-its-kind Android mobile plan in Kenya

Netflix Kenya launches a new Android mobile plan that allows users to view a limited number of its shows, as well as full seasons.
Netflix announced this week that the new ad free Netflix mobile plan for Android will be available. Users can sign up without entering any payment information. However, they will need to verify their age and submit an email address in order to create a login.

Netflix hopes that users will upgrade to a premium subscription

The Verge was informed by a spokesperson for Netflix that this is the first time Netflix has offered a free tier. The free plan will include roughly 25% of Netflix's library, and subscribers will be able watch full seasons of Netflix shows. Netflix stated that it hopes users who enjoy the service will upgrade to a paid subscription. These subscriptions support streaming from televisions and laptops.

In an effort to attract new subscribers, Netflix has tried free-to-stream content in the past. Netflix previously made some of its content accessible on YouTube. After removing its free trial period in the US, the company tried a free-to watch portal that offered a limited selection of titles. HBO Max, which also ended its free trial before Wonder Woman 1984's day-and date release on the service, has experimented similarly with offering limited episodes free of charge to increase its subscriber base.

Netflix's Android plan is free for Kenyan users. It was launched Monday.
