SANTA CLARA (Calif.) -- The San Francisco 49ers returned home to the Bay Area unconcerned about which running backs would be available next week against the Green Bay Packers after three of their running backs were injured in Sunday's win over the Philadelphia Eagles.
While there is still some uncertainty, Kyle Shanahan, the Niners' coach, said Monday that one of the three backs cannot be ruled out for next weeks and beyond.
The Niners will be without JaMycal Hasty, their backup JaMycal for the next few weeks. This happened just one week after Rahem Mostert had started running back.
Hasty was injured in his ankle during the Eagles' 17-11 victory. Hasty did not return to play and additional tests on Monday showed that the sprain usually requires at least three weeks to heal. Hasty is now eligible to be placed on the injured reserve.
The Niners have good news: rookies Trey Sermon and Elijah Mitchell are both expected to be able to play Sunday against the Packers. Mitchell is listed as day-to-day. Sermon must complete concussion protocol in order to be eligible to play.
Shanahan stated that JaMycal was the only one that is certain out. "Elijah, Trey have a chance. We'll watch how this week goes."
In just five minutes, Mitchell, Hasty, and Sermon were all injured by the Eagles. The 49ers were forced to use Trenton Cannon to replace Mitchell, Hasty, and Sermon at one point.
Cannon, as it stands, is the only running back who is healthy on the active roster. However, the 49ers have Kerryon Johnson on their practice squad.
Shanahan remains optimistic that Mitchell or Sermon will be available this week. However, the Niners are still looking into potential running back options. Shanahan stated that the team will be bringing in veteran T.J. Yeldon and Duke Johnson for workouts within the next 24 hours.
