Amazon leaks new Kindle Paperwhite with larger 6.8-inch display

GoodEReader reports that a new generation of Kindle devices has leaked through a previously removed comparison chart on Amazon Canada. The chart shows two new devices, a CA$149.99 (around £117) Kindle Paperwhite and a CA$209.99 (164) Kindle Paperwhite signature edition. Both have a 6.8-inch Eink display, which is larger than the 6-inch Paperwhite. However, only the higher-end model features wireless charging and more storage. Lights that adjust according to ambient brightness are also available on the more expensive model.
The 8GB storage capacity of the basic Kindle Paperwhite seems to be 8GB. 32GB storage is available in the Signature Edition. This is the same storage option as the other options for the Paperwhite. The resolution of 300ppi is unchanged. The number of LEDs used for the front-lighting has increased from five to 17 with the current Paperwhite. They should also have an adjustable color temperature, similar to the current Kindle Oasis. Both devices' screens will be flush with their bezels and have the same IPX8 waterproof rating as the Paperwhite. Wi-Fi connectivity is available, but it doesn't mention cellular models.

Improved front light

The new Kindle Paperwhites will inherit some features from Oasis but there will be some unique features for Amazons premium ereader. According to the table, these include an ergonomic design, auto-rotating pages orientation and physical page-turn buttons.

It is not clear which type of USB connector the new Kindles will use. This makes it unclear if Amazon plans to finally upgrade them to USB C after using Micro USB for so long. Even Amazon's premium Kindle Oasis still uses the old USB connector.

The news of the new models comes after the release of a new interface for Kindles since 2015. The new layout includes a navigation bar to make it easier for users to navigate between the Home screen, library and currently in progress book. This new interface is likely to be preloaded on all new Kindles.

It is not clear when Amazon will officially announce the new ereaders. Amazon usually holds a fall hardware event in September so it is possible that we will not be too far off.
