British Airways Executive Club Extends Elite Status

British Airways Executive Club extended its status by 12 months in 2020, just before the outbreak of the pandemic. The airline announced a second status extension in spring 2021 for certain members. A status extension was also announced for members who did not receive the previous one. Let's look at the details.
British Airways extends its status for 12 months

British Airways Executive Club status does not depend on the year of birth, rather individual membership years. To earn Executive Club status, members must earn a certain amount of Tier Club points in their qualification year.

Here's how British Airways Executive Club handles status extensions currently:

Members with Tier Club collection ends dates between July 1st and December 31st 2021 had their status extended for an additional 12 months this spring regardless of how many Tier points they have earned.

Members with Tier Club collection ends dates between January 1st and March 31st 2022 will see their status extend by 12 months regardless of how many Tier Points earned.

This means that no British Airways Executive Club members will lose their status in 2021 or the first three month of 2022. (It is possible for renewal dates earlier in 2022 to be extended, depending on the progress of the pandemic).

These extensions are the latest in a series of British Airways Executive Club offers to its members a one-year extension.

British Airways has reduced the status threshold

British Airways has extended some status to certain passengers, and the program has also reduced Tier Points requirements by 25% for Tier Point collection years ending in June 2022. This was previously announced. This is useful for anyone looking to gain status, requalify, or reach a higher elite level.

These are the reduced Tier Point thresholds:

Bronze status requires 18 eligible flights or 225 Tier Points

Silver status requires 450 Tier points or 37 eligible flights

1.125 Tier Points are required to attain Gold Status

For those who are able to take advantage of the reduced status requirements, the requirement to fly at least two British Airways or Iberia flight per month (two for Bronze members and four for Silver/Gold members) is still in effect.

How about British Airways vouchers being extended

British Airways announced this spring that it would extend expiration dates for Companion Vouchers and Gold Upgrade Vouchers. Six months more validity was added to those due to expire prior December 31, 2021. This was the third extension of this nature, after similar extensions in March 2020 or October 2020.

This time, however, we are not seeing any further extensions to these vouchers. We could still see more extensions in the future.

Bottom line

British Airways Executive Club will extend some members' status by 12 months. This extension will be available to those who have renewed between July 1, 2021 and March 31, 2022. This will be beneficial to some members but not all, due to the way British Airways elite qualification works. It would be surprising if there aren't any extensions for people with qualifications that expire in 2022.

British Airways has also lowered its elite requirements by 25% and extended vouchers previously (although there are no changes).
