Celtic make worst league start in 23 years

This is the worst league season start in 23 years. In seven months, there have been no domestic away wins. Six of the seven road losses this season were in competitions. A fourth defeat in five games.
Ange Postecoglou is not pleased with the statistics of Celtic manager. His side are currently in sixth place in Scotland's Premiership after six games.

The Australian said that they had played well in all games, and questioned the consistency of his team's performance in the league.

It's not enough. We can't keep losing in these games if we want to succeed. This is the test.

Are Celtic on the verge of making a breakthrough and going on a positive path? Or are their problems deeper?

Poor road conditions

Last season, Celtic finished 25 behind Rangers in points and ended the campaign with no silverware. John Kennedy took over as manager from Neil Lennon in February.

However, Celtic lost only five league games throughout the campaign - three to Rangers. They've now lost three games this season.

In 1998-99, Celtic's last campaign was so badly started. They were the ones that had just stopped Rangers from winning 10 consecutive titles. However, they lost two and drew four in the first eight games of their title defense.

They have often played free-flowing, attacking football this season. Six goals were scored against Dundee, and six against St Mirren. They were up 2-0 and had many chances to win the Spanish game against Real Betis on Thursday. However, they lost 4-3 in Spain. In West Lothian, that attacking verve was absent.

Alarmingly, they have not won domestically away from home since February 14th. Six of the nine losses were in home games.

Gary Holt, former Livingston boss, said on BBC Sportsound that "it's a staggering stat for a team such as Celtic." "I have been impressed with them. But how do you handle adversity? Is that mentality that they haven’t won away from their home getting into you?"

After six games, the points totals for Celtic are

Insufficient match winners

Striker Odsonne Eduard has left for Crystal Palace. Ryan Christie has moved from Bournemouth to Bournemouth, and Leigh Griffiths is currently on loan at Dundee.

At Celtic Park, it's a new era. Japanese star Kyogo furuhashi, a Japanese international player, scored seven goals in the first eight games. However, he will be out of action for at most a month due to an injury sustained while on international duty. James Forrest, captain Callum McGregor, and other players are also out of action.

Albian Ajeti scored in the Europa League midweek match against Real Betis. This was five days after Albian Ajeti had scored two goals in the 3-0 Premiership victory over Ross County. Although the Swiss striker scored three goals in eight games so far, he did not make an impact on Sunday.

Holt stated, "That was only Livingston's 2nd win in 19." Holt said, "Celtic did not do anything, they disappointed me, and they were trying to score a perfect goal." Livingston had the best chance to win the game.

"Kyogo is a good player, but he does not stretch the game. He goes in the channels and Ajeti doesn’t do that. It will be difficult for the two centre-backs to play a better game.

"When you lose the focal point of your team, it can sometimes fester in the rest of the team. They just think that we are a goal behind and don't seem like we're going score."

Pat Bonner, a former Celtic goalkeeper, questions whether Celtic too heavily rely on Kyogo.

BBC Sportsound he said: "Possession won't get any results if there isn't an end product.

"The pitch players should be able create more than just that. They started the season very well. They have come back a little today.

"They must get their players back. Kyogo is crucial to them but they cannot rely on one player. They need to get the rest of them on board.

Ange Postecoglou: Celtic results "not good enough"

What's next?

Celtic's fixture list is a challenge, especially considering their away record.

Three home games are up in a row: Raith Rovers in League Cup, Dundee United Premiership match against Dundee United and then Bayer Leverkusen Europa League meeting.

Then, comes October.

The Premiership's three next away games for them are at Aberdeen Motherwell and Hibernian. On their previous visits, Celtic did not win at Pittodrie or Easter Road. Motherwell and Hibernian also rank above the Parkhead side of the table, which is a worrying sign.

Although Rangers is the top team, Celtic fans may be only looking at Rangers. As they attempt to regain the title across the city, they are already four points behind Glasgow rivals.

Before a Motherwell second-half goal, Steven Gerrard's team was six points ahead of Celtic. They were denied a 22nd consecutive Premiership victory at Ibrox.

Bonner said, "It could've been worse." "They [Celtic] managed to get away with it, with Rangers and Hibs and Hearts drawing the day before.

"They cannot afford to keep dropping points, creating that gap for Rangers."
