Singapore's daily Covid cases breach 1,000 over the weekend — first time since April 2020

As a preventive measure against Covid-19 spreading in Singapore, people wear face masks.
This is the highest figure since April 23, last year. Most of the cases in Singapore were found in migrant worker dormitories at that time. On April 20, 2020, infection rates reached a record high at 1,426.

According to data from the ministry of health, 1,009 infections were confirmed in the country on Saturday and 1,012 cases on Sunday.

SINGAPORE, Singapore reported more Than 1,000 Covid cases in two consecutive days. This was the first time that number has exceeded 1000 since April 2020, when the pandemic was at its peak.

Infectious diseases are on the rise and it is almost like a natural progression, Health Minister Ong Yekung stated Friday at a virtual press conference.

He pointed out that more than 80% of Singaporeans have been vaccinated. This makes it different from other countries.

Ong stated that there is no doubt that the country would have experienced many deaths and an overloaded health-care system had it not been for the vaccinations.

He said, "We have avoided that so far because we have very high vaccination coverage."

Now, the government is focusing on the most seriously ill patients and deaths. Since the outbreak of the pandemic, 60 people have died.

According to the daily update of the health ministry, 98.1% were either asymptomatic or only mildly ill over the past 28 days.

As of Sept. 19, there were 7,144 cases in active care. 118 patients require oxygen supplementation, 21 are critically ill in the ICU and 21 need to be monitored.

The health ministry stated previously that it could increase the ICU capacity up to 1,000 beds if necessary.
