Fashion company behind Ocasio-Cortez's 'Tax the Rich' dress has history of not paying taxes: report

According to a Saturday report, the company behind Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez's "Tax the Rich” dress has a history in not paying taxes, according to a Saturday report.
The New York Post reported that Brother Vellies, owned by Aurora James, was facing three open tax warrants for failure to withhold income taxes of employees' paychecks. It had nearly $15,000 in total.

James designed the "Tax the Rich", a highly publicized gown for AOC. AOC wore the gown at the 2021 Met Gala. Celebrities, actors, politicians, and others attended the event which began on September 13.

These debts date back to 2018 and 2019 but were made before the pandemic. Since 2015, the company has received 15 warrants. The company was also issued 15 warrants in total by the Internal Revenue Service since 2015.

David Cenedella, a Baruch College taxation lecturer said that just because they take it from your paycheck, doesn't mean they are sending it to government. This is not something you would want. It's not something that every business has. Something went wrong.

James has had a history with rent disputes. In February 2018, James was sued by a previous landlord for over $5,000 in unpaid rent at her old Manhattan address. In August 2020, another landlord filed papers to evict Brother Vellies out of Brooklyn. He demanded $25,000 plus interest to keep the lease in place. The case was eventually settled according to the outlet.

The Washington Examiner did not receive a response from Brother Vellies immediately.
