Brighton & Hove Albion 2-1 Leicester City: Seagulls hold off late pressure to go third

Jannik Vestergaard was punished for handling Shane Duffy’s header under pressure by Neal Maupay

As a result of their excellent start to the Premier League season, Brighton held off a late Leicester rally and moved up to third in the table.

Although the Foxes thought they had saved a point twice in the final stages, Ademola Lookman (Wilfred Ndidi) both saw Harvey Barnes scoring offside goals.

Brighton dominated the first hour, but they needed a controversial penalty in the second. Neal Maupay scored his third goal of this season from the spot following Jannik Vestergaard’s handball.

Vestergaard claimed Maupay's foul caused him to handle Shane Duffy’s header. However, Stuart Attwell, the referee, awarded a spot-kick after long deliberations.

Brighton beat Leicester - Potter with a little luck

Brighton's advantage was doubled by Danny Welbeck in the second period. He smashed home a near-post header with Leandro Trossard’s free-kick wide.

Leicester finally came to life. Jamie Vardy reduced the deficit by sidefooting Youri Tielemans’ first cross in from close range. It was a fine one touch move.

They were denied a point because Barnes was twice adjudged to be interfering with play after Lookman hit the ball from a corner, while Ndidi reacted from another.

The defeat was Leicester's third in five games, while Brighton recorded their first Premier League win over the Foxes in nine years since they were promoted to the top flight four year ago.

Key decisions made by Rodgers were shockingly against Leicester

Spot-kick saga raises again VAR issue

Brighton won thanks to Attwell's decision not to penalise Vestergaard (handball) after the Denmark defender was beaten by Duffy to a header in a corner.

Although the referee initially did not award the penalty, he gestured for a corner instead. However, he changed his mind after a conference and a meeting with his assistant.

It was clear that Vestergaard was raising his right arm in an unnatural way when Duffy attempted to divert Vestergaard’s head off target.

Leicester claimed that his flailing arm was caused by Maupay's left arm holding down the defender, impeding him from jumping. The video assistant referee didn't intervene.

After Harvey Barnes (left, out of shot), was adjudged offside, Wilfred Ndidi had his header ruled out.

Again, the Foxes were aggrieved again by the officials for the two unsuccessful attempts that were ruled out. However, Barnes was within the line of Seagulls goalkeeper Robert Sanchez at both times.

There were other opportunities for them to win, but Caglar Anduncu failed to score with a header from a corner. Tielemans was unable to score in injury time and Brighton held on.

This late attack had seemed unlikely for most of the game, as Brighton fully deserved the two-goal lead Maupay & Welbeck gave them.

However, Vardy's 250th Premier League appearance was marked by his 150th Leicester goal. The visitors rallied but were ultimately left empty-handed.
