Andrew Shinnie (left), fired Livingston to a lead in the first half
Celtic, which was in deep trouble, lost the fourth game in five in all competitions. Andrew Shinnie's goal lifted Livingston from the bottom of the Scottish Premiership.
Celtic have been without an away win for seven months, which is a rare feat in this country.
Shinnie put the home team ahead in the first half, where Max Stryjek, the visitor's goalkeeper, was not tested.
They were able to improve after the break, but couldn't salvage a point.
After three league losses in six games, Celtic Toil is now in sixth place and four points behind Rangers champions.
Livingston, who previously won just one point in five matches, now ranks ninth.
Boli Bolingoli has not been seen in a Celtic shirt since his three-minute appearance at Kilmarnock on September 9, 2020. Boli Bolingoli was sent on loan to Turkey after he had taken an ill-judged trip to Spain during the Covid-19 pandemic. He is unlikely to be seen again for the club.
Ange Postecoglou had the Zaire-born fullback back in his side. To win over the skeptical Celtic supporters, he had to put on a big performance.
As expected, Celtic began on the front foot but very little was falling for them inside the box. Liel Abada scored, while cross balls missed their target.
Livingston had to wait and hope for something, but their patience paid off when Shinnie scored the first goal of his career.
David Martindale assigned him as a striker. He got to Stephen Welsh and took a nice touch. Then he turned around and shot a goal past Joe Hart.
Although Celtic were shaken, their dominance continued. Livingston goalkeeper Stryjek had a good afternoon, with Cameron Carter-Vickers missing half chances and David Turnbull missing the other.
Hart, Stryjek's opponent, had to make a stunning point-blank save in order to deny Jack Fitzwater a header.
Celtic needed some creativity. Tom Rogic attempted to give it with a driving course but was stopped by a crowd of Livingston shirts. Turnbull and Welsh tried their best, but Stryjek again collected them with minimal fuss.
Albian Ajeti was struggling to make an impact but he went wide and then turned brilliantly on to the box's edge before forcing Stryjek to make his first major save. Celtic started to look at them as they were facing defeat.
Stryjek was able to save Turnbull again, but Hart had to keep Celtic alive at the other end after he blocked Alan Forrest's low-angled shot.
Lately, Celtic increased the pressure. Carter-Vickers made a long-distance effort that was just short of the post. Fitzwater then had to make a clearance after Stryjek dropped a cross.
Livingston would not concede the goal and haven't lost at home to Celtic since February 2007.
Andrew Shinnie is the man of the match
Andrew Shinnie (left), took his goal very well and held onto the ball when he needed it.
What have we learned?
This season, Celtic appears to have two sides. The more swashbuckling version scored 12 in two games with Dundee, St Mirren and had scored three on Thursday at Seville.
The version that was shown in West Lothian looked a bit sloppy in the last third. It also didn't look like Livingston's goal.
The home team was rooted to the bottom and without a win. They made it as difficult as they could, and David Martindale's decision not to play Shinnie was a good move.
What's next?
Livingston will be away at Rangers in Wednesday's League Cup (19:45 BST), before travelling to Hearts in Saturday's Premiership (15:00). Celtic hosts Raith Rovers in League Cup on Thursday (19.45) before Dundee United welcomes them in the Premiership on Sunday (15:00).
