The largest demonstration of how a quantum internet might work is the city-wide quantum communication network that runs in Hefei, China. It has been operating for nearly three years.

Teng-Yun Chen, University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), and his collaborators created the network using commercial fibre optics hardware. It connects 40 computers at universities, government buildings and banks. Each subnetwork is separated by approximately 15 km.
