The strange thing is that a woman born without the brain areas required to smell, has suddenly begun to smell things for the first times in her twenties. She finds it extremely unpleasant.
Congenital anosmia, the inability to sense smell, was diagnosed in the woman at age 13. Brain imaging showed that she had lost the olfactory bulb in her forebrain, which detects odour information from her nose and relays it to other brain parts involved in smell perception.
