The world's longest cave system grows as new underground passages found in Mammoth Cave

Mammoth Cave National Park, Kentucky, has been explored for almost 200 years. However, there are still some mysteries.
Researchers discovered eight miles of underground passages in Mammoth Cave. This cave is the longest known and most extensive. The Cave Research Foundation led the discovery, which brings the total number of cave passages to 420 miles.

"When it comes down to discoveries in Mammoth cave, there is truly no end in sight!" The National Park Service (NPS), tweeted.

According to the NPS, Cave Research Foundation volunteers visit the park each year to map new passages and help with management. This is a complex process in which volunteers from the Cartographic Program trek through the subterranean landscape with compasses, measuring tapes, and range finders to uncover new passages.

There are always new caves being discovered. While visitors will not be able access these new passageways, there are still many routes to enjoy in the five level cave system. This includes the Grand Avenue route, which was recently upgraded with new benches, handrails, and better trail paths.
