Newcastle United 1-1 Leeds United: Allan Saint-Maximin equaliser eases pressure on Steve Bruce

Allan Saint-Maximin scored just before the break

Allan Saint-Maximin's excellent equalizer lifted the pressure on Newcastle boss Steve Bruce, as his team earned a point against Leeds.

After Bruce was forced to defend himself against further criticisms from fans, the mood became tense inside St James' Park. Raphinha came in from the right and crossed into Karl Darlow's goal at 13 minutes.

The stadium was filled with cheers as Leeds threatened to riot against a disjointed Newcastle.

Marcelo Bielsa's wild side should have been more ahead before the break. But after Matt Ritchie hit an assist, Saint-Maximin lifted spirits when he danced around Leeds' defence before reaching the bottom corner.

Both Bruce and Newcastle were delighted to achieve this goal, which was huge for them both. It also restored equilibrium after a difficult first half.

Bruce was relieved after the break, when Newcastle switched to four backs and Saint-Maximin twice tested Illan Melier in the Leeds goal.

Both sides were still looking for their first win of this season and they ended up at the wrong end.

Bruce was able to keep his head above water despite the fact that he will be asked to leave the club after the game is over. His face said it all as a man who was relieved, but faces a difficult task of turning the tide.

Newcastle United 1-1 Leeds United: Steve Bruce is 'delighted’ with the fight to win the draw

Bruce had declared for a week that quitting was "not my nature". This atmosphere may have proved his family right to believe he was sick to keep the job.

Three minutes passed before one section of the audience sang, "We Want Brucey Out." But as Leeds' constant counter-attacks wore down, large sections from St James' Park let their emotions be known.

The atmosphere was boiling over in a fast-paced first half where Leeds could have scored three to four goals.

Raphinha's opening was yet another stain on a defense that came into the match having conceded 13 goal, the highest in the Premier League this year.

Karl Darlow, who was in hospital with Covid-19, returned to goal and was called into action several times. However, Leeds still provided plenty of opportunities for Raphinha and Daniel James, Mateusz Klich, Junior Firpo and Junior Firpo all getting close.

Bruce, a stressed man, sighed as he watched from the sidelines. Despite Newcastle's defensive flaws, they looked sharp in attack with Saint-Maximin at the centre of their endeavour. He proved to be a hero in the end.

Ritchie scored a good goal from the French forward, but Newcastle was unable to concede again because Raphinha missed when he was alone in the opposition box.

Bruce and Newcastle were able to play a more measured and even second half without Callum Wilson last season, which was a significant change from the energetic first half.

Darlow, who took over for Freddie Woodman, provided extra assurance, especially as he tried to defend Jamaal Lascelles who nearly went into his net.

Saint-Maximin pulled two fine stops from Meslier at the Leeds goal. This created an excellent chance for Joelinton to fire over and groans around the ground.

Newcastle's under-fire boss could have had a much worse first half, so a point was a respectable return that spoke to a positive second-half.

Bielsa's team was drawn for their third season draw. Although it was their first five-game streak without a win, it was a good sign that they will improve their form.

Newcastle was not the same, but "Bruce out", chants were heard and they only collected their second point of season to remain 18th.
