American Express and Delta have been in close contact for many years. As a result, seven Delta Amex cards are co-branded, including the Blue and Gold cards as well as the Platinum and Reserve cards.

Basics of the Gold Delta Amex Card September 2021

This post will focus on the Delta SkyMiles Gold American Express Card. The card is affordable and offers basic benefits that are useful when flying Delta. A different card may be better if you are a Medallion elite Delta flyer. More details below.

Delta Gold Amex Welcome Bonus: 70,000 SkyMiles

The Gold Delta SkyMiles Amex offers a limited-time welcome bonus of 70,000 SkyMiles for those who spend $2,000 within the first 3 months. This is a significant bonus and the 70,000 SkyMiles can also be used to purchase a minimum $700 worth of Delta airfare.

SkyMiles can be used to redeem for China Airlines' excellent business class

Card Eligibility

You can only get the welcome bonus once in your life. You can still get the Delta Amex card in any flavor, so this card is available to you if your card has been the Reserve or Platinum, as well as the business version.

Annual Fee (Waived the First Year)

The $99 annual fee for the Gold Delta SkyMiles American Express Card is waived during the current offer (Rates and Fees). This is a great way to try the card out before you buy it. The card can be extended to allow you to add more users at no additional cost.

Earn Miles with the Gold Delta Amex Card

Offers on the Gold Delta SkyMiles credit card:

2x SkyMiles to be used for direct Delta purchases, such as for flight tickets, Delta SkyClub memberships and seat upgrades.

SkyMiles 2x at all restaurants worldwide

SkyMiles 2x at U.S. supermarkets

All other purchases eligible for 1x SkyMiles

With the card, you can earn bonus points for dining purchases

Although I like the bonus categories on the card, I don't find them to be very compelling. There are better cards available for airline purchases, restaurant purchases, or grocery store purchases.

No Foreign Transaction Fees

The good news about the Gold Delta Amex is that you don't have to pay any foreign transaction fees (Rates and Fees). You can also use the card overseas without worrying about paying high fees.

Benefits & Perks for the Gold Delta Amex Card

Although the Gold Delta SkyMiles Credit Card offers a great welcome bonus, it is not one I would recommend for daily spending.

You will want to keep the card for the long-term because of the perks, benefits and other benefits it provides. These are great for casual Delta flyers. Let's take a closer look.

First Checked Bag Free

The Gold Delta SkyMiles Card gives you a free first checked bag. This is a $30 per person discount.

This benefit is only available to the primary cardmember, and any other person traveling on the same reservation as them (up to nine persons).

Your Delta Amex card does not have to be used to pay for the flight. However, you will need your SkyMiles number to make the reservation.

This applies only to Delta Connection and Delta Travel.

This bag is great value considering that it costs $60 per person roundtrip. You can save $120 roundtrip if you travel with someone, which is more than the annual fee.

Delta Gold Amex allows you to save on checked bag fees

Delta Priority Boarding

Delta Gold Amex members get Main Cabin 1 Priority boarding on Delta flights. This allows you to board earlier and ensures that you have enough space for your carry-ons.

You can also use this card to travel with up to nine other people on the same reservation as the primary cardmember.

Delta Gold Amex allows you to board first with priority

20% Delta Inflight Savings

You can save 20% on eligible pre-purchased meals and in-flight purchases. The statement credit will take between 8-12 weeks to post.

The card offers you a discount on your inflight purchases

$100 Delta Flight Credit

Delta Gold Amex gives you a $100 Delta flight credit if you spend $10,000 in purchases within a calendar year. This is equivalent to an incremental 1% return. This is not an incentive to spend a lot on the card, since there are better cards available for everyday spending.

You could get a Delta flight credit by spending money on this card

Pay with Miles

Delta offers a Pay With Miles option, where you can redeem one cent for each Delta flight purchase if you have a Delta credit card. This is in increments of 5,000 mile per $50. Although it isn't the best deal anywhere, this feature is only available to eligible cardholders.

This is a great way to earn elite miles and redeem your miles for flights.

SkyMiles members love Pay with Points.

Amex Offers

Amex Cards offer great benefits such as access to Amex Offers. These offers include discounts or bonus points for purchases at all types of retailers. You can save a lot of money by getting multiple Amex cards so you can receive these deals on multiple cards.

You could save hundreds of dollars each year by using Amex offers. These offers can be accessed by logging in to your account and scrolling to the bottom on your account summary page.

ShopRunner Membership

You get the Delta Gold Amex and a ShopRunner membership. This gives you two-day free shipping on eligible products at more than 100 online shops. To take advantage of your free membership, you only need to sign up.

Purchase Protection and Extended Warranty

The card offers many other benefits that make it worth your while to spend money. This card offers:

Purchase protection: You are covered up to 90 days after the purchase date when you charge eligible items to your card

Extended warranty: You can get an additional year to your original warranty if the warranty is less than five years.

You will need to review your cardmember agreement in both cases.

Is the Gold Delta SkyMiles American Express worth it?

I wouldn't use the Gold Delta SkyMiles credit card for everyday spending as there are so many other rewarding cards. But:

The card comes with a great welcome bonus and the annual fee is waived for the first year.

It is worth keeping this card for priority boarding, first checked bag free, inflight savings and access to Amex Offers and Pay With Miles.

This means that if you fly Delta often, this card is worth it. The benefits are more than the annual fee.

Are You Looking for a Business Credit Card?

This card may sound appealing, but you prefer a business card. The Delta SkyMiles Gold Business American Express card is an alternative. The card offers almost all the same benefits, with the exception of the welcome bonus. The only difference is that the card's business card earns 2x SkyMiles for U.S. shipping, advertising and freight. This is in addition to 2x SkyMiles at U.S. grocery stores.

What about the Deltas No Annual Fee Cards?

The Delta SkyMiles Blue American Express Card is free of annual fees (Rates and Fees). It also offers the following benefits:

SkyMiles are 2x on Delta purchases, as well as at all restaurants around the world.

You get 20% off your inflight purchase

There are no foreign transaction fees (Rates and Fees) for the card.

You have access to Deltas Pay With Miles features with the card

There are very few perks beyond that. You would be better off paying an annual fee if you are looking for value in a first checked bag or priority boarding.

Quick Showdown: Delta Gold Amex Vs. Delta Platinum Amex

You might also consider the Delta SkyMiles Platinum American Express Card (review) if you are considering the Gold Delta SkyMiles Amex. Which card is the best? It is how I see it.

The Delta Gold Card is for occasional Delta flyers who don't want to be elite, but who value basic perks such as priority boarding and free checked bags.

The Platinum Card is for frequent Delta flyers, particularly those who are going to status.

These are the main differences between Platinum and Gold.

For a limited time, the Platinum receives a 90,000 bonus SkyMiles and 10,000 bonus MQMs as a welcome bonus. This is available to all who spend $3,000 within the first three month.

Platinum members pay a $250 annual fee. (Rates and Fees)

Platinum offers an annual companion certificate (upon renewal of your account) for a domestic main-cabin roundtrip flight

You can use the Platinum to earn status.

The Platinum offers discounted Delta SkyClub Access at a rate of $39/visit

Delta Platinum access to discounted Delta SkyClub memberships

Earn Amex Membership Rewards points

You can earn Delta SkyMiles by using your credit cards. Consider a card that earns Amex Membership Rewards points. These points can be converted to Delta SkyMiles at 1:1 ratio and in many cases, you can earn points much quicker.

The American Express Gold Card (review), offers 4x points at U.S. restaurants and U.S. supermarkets on purchases up to $25,000 per year, and 3x points for flights booked directly with airlines and amextravel.com.

Summary of the Delta Amex Gold card

For the many benefits it offers such as a free checked bag and priority boarding, inflight discounts, and more, the Gold Delta SkyMiles Credit Card can be worth keeping. The limited-time welcome bonus and waived annual fees for the first year make this a great time to apply.

The Platinum Delta SkyMiles Credit Card is for frequent Delta flyers.
