The Key Facts

From April to July, the CDC examined over 600,000. Covid-19 cases in 13 U.S. states and cities. Only 8% of these cases were among fully vaccinated people. After the introduction of the dominant strain of the virus, vaccines proved less effective in stopping infections overall. Unvaccinated individuals were 4.6 times more likely than those who had been vaccinated between April and July. This is a decrease from the 11.1 that was seen between April and June. The effectiveness of vaccines dropped from 91% down to 78% during the same time period. The vaccines were still able to stop hospitalizations and deaths. Vaccinated Americans were 10.4 times more likely to be admitted to the hospital than those who had not been vaccinated before the virus's onset. They also survived 11.3 times longer than those who died from the disease. This is a slight drop from the 13.3 and 16.6 that existed prior to the onset of delta. The CDC stated that 90% of vaccines prevented hospitalizations and 91% prevented death after June. This is a slight decrease from 92% and 94% before delta.

Surprising Fact

A CDC study published Friday showed that Modernas coronavirus vaccination was more effective at preventing hospitalizations during the delta surge. According to data from nine states, Modernas effectiveness was 92%. Pfizers vaccine had 77% effectiveness, and Johnson & Johnsons vaccine was at 65%. This is according to data from the states that were collected between June and August.

Tangent

According to the CDC, vaccines are less effective in seniors. According to a CDC analysis of five Veterans Affairs hospitals, Modernas and Pfizer vaccines were 95% effective in stopping hospitalizations for adults younger than 65. They were 80% effective for Americans over 65.

Big Number

73.4% This is the percentage of Americans aged 12 and older who have had at least one Covid-19 shot according to the CDC. Health officials across the nation reported that more than 350,000 people lined up daily for their first vaccine shot in the past week. This is an increase from 220,000 in early juillet, but still below the 2 million mark in mid-April.

Important Background

Since mid-August, the United States has seen more than 1,000 Covid-19 cases per day. This is due to a spike in coronavirus infection rates during summer. Experts blame the increase in Covid-19 deaths on the virus more transmissible Delta variant. However, officials are concerned about the stagnant vaccination rates. In some states, vaccination rates remain below 60%. This leaves many communities at risk for Covid-19 epidemics and hospital capacity crunch. The Biden administration is urging unvaccinated persons to get inoculated. On Thursday, the White House issued a strict vaccine mandate to federal employees. Officials also laid out plans for private employers with over 100 employees to have their employees either vaccinated or submit Covid-19 tests weekly.

Important Quote
