Watch a Tesla Model S Set a World Record on a Racetrack

Your move, Porsche.
New Record

Tesla shared a video showing its Model S Plaid supercar racing around the Nrburgring racecar circuit in Germany. It set a new world record of 7:35 for an official lap time, which is a world record for an EV production vehicle.

This feat is impressive for a car that was already the fastest ever produced.

Tesla Model S Plaid has just broken the Nurburgring world record for an electric vehicle production car, Tesla CEO Elon Musk tweeted on Thursday. Straight from the factory, completely unmodified.

No Joke

The video is seven minutes long and shows the driver with his controversial yoke steering wheels in hand, ripping through tight corners at more than 60 mph. The car crosses the 160 mph threshold (260 km/h), in a straightaway.

It is powered entirely by battery power so noises are very different from traditional combustion engine-powered track car engines.

InsideEVs reports that the Porsche Taycan Turbo, which was driven around the track in just 7 minutes and 42 seconds in August 2019, set the next fastest time. This puts it seven seconds behind Tesla's record.

Rumours surfaced in September 2019 that a modified Model S had run a lap in 7 minutes and 23 seconds. However, the times could not be verified and the car probably had some significant modifications to the model S Plaid, which is what you see in this weeks video.

The Plaid version boasts some amazing specs. The car can go from 0-60 mph in under 2 seconds. This is a remarkable feat that easily surpasses even the most powerful gas-powered hypercars. It has a remarkable EPA-rated range, 348 miles. The Taycan Turbo can only travel 200 miles.

This feat sets a new standard for modern consumer cars. Now it's up to Teslas rivals to go further.
