The iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro were launched last year with Dolby Vision HDR video shooting capabilities. However, it has not been possible to share or post those files anywhere.
Now, nearly a year later than they were announced, Apple, Dolby and Vimeo have teamed up to enable iPhone 12 owners to upload Dolby Vision HDR videos.
You can upload DolbyVision videos taken with iPhone 12 devices, either directly or after editing in Final Cut Pro, to Vimeo. Anyone will be able stream them. Dolby Vision videos uploaded to Vimeo will feature a badge that highlights the HDR content. This will make it easy to see (and show off) the better video quality.
To view your iPhone 12-shot videos, you will still need a DolbyVision-compatible device. This can, as Nilay pointed out in his review, be tricky. Vimeo will only support Apple devices from the beginning: iPhone 8 and newer, or second-gen iPad Pro. The company also states that an HDR-compatible Mac can be used (see Apples' list here) and an Apple TV 4K, if there is a Dolby Vision TV to connect to them.
However, you won't be able view DolbyVision videos on Vimeo if you own another DolbyVision streaming device (or Windows computer). The feature is currently only available for iOS, tvOS and macOS devices.
Even if you're still stuck to Apple devices for video viewing, Vimeo support makes it easier to share and watch Dolby Vision HDR videos with friends, rather than sharing files to them to be viewed on their iPad or iPhone.
