The BBC Sport website has audio and text coverage of this year's Italian Grand Prix.
Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton won the Italian Grand Prix in his first practice ahead of Red Bull title rival Max Verstappen.
Hamilton ran medium tyres and was 0.42 seconds faster than Verstappen using the soft compound.
Valtteri bottas came third, 0.55 seconds behind Hamilton.
An hour-long qualifying session will replace the usual second practice to determine the grid for Saturday's "sprint race" qualifying.
After the British Grand Prix in July, this is the second F1 race of the season.
Aston Martin's Lance Stroll came in surprising fourth, with Sebastian Vettel in sixth. Aston Martin and Alpha Tauri, both midfield teams, appear to be able to run at Monza's low-downforce circuit.
Pierre Gasly, Alpha Tauri's shock winner last year, was fifth. Carlos Sainz was seventh for Ferrari, Fernando Alonso eighth, McLaren's Daniel Ricciardo ninth, Verstappen's fellow-teammate Sergio Perez was ninth.
The grid for Sunday's main grand prix will be set by Saturday's sprint race.
Champion points will be awarded for the "sprint" event. Three championship points go to the winner, one each for second and third.
Officially, the winner of the sprint race will be recognized as the driver who achieved pole position.
Hamilton is currently trailing Verstappen by 3 points in the title race.
The first practice at Monza was held in dry, warm conditions in the Lombardy region of Italy near Milan. It is known as the "cathedral for speed" because of its rich motorsport history.
Williams' George Russell came 17th fastest. He is still high after the announcement that he will be partnering Hamilton at Mercedes next year.
Bottas will replace Kimi Raikkonen as the driver for Alfa Romeo in 2022.
Raikkonen will not be able to compete in the second race following his positive coronavirus testing. He qualified at the Dutch Grand Prix last Wednesday.
Robert Kubica (an experienced pole) was just ahead Russell in 16th.
