Jaskaran Malhotra's 16 sixes were just one shy of the record that Eoin Morgan, England, set against Afghanistan in the 2019 World Cup.
Jaskaran Malhotra, a United States batsman, has become the ninth player to hit six sixes during an over of top-level cricket.
In an Oman one-day international, the 31-year old scored runs against Gaudi Toka, a pace bowler from Papua New Guinea.
After Herschelle Gibbs of South Africa in 2007, he is the second player to accomplish the feat in ODI cricket.
It also meant that Malhotra, who had scored 18 runs in his previous innings, was unbeaten at 173, the highest single-day score of a US batsman.
In 2019, Aaron Jones beat United Arab Emirates 95 to make the previous record.
Malhotra also broke the record for highest score by a number 5 in ODI cricket. This surpasses the 162 run by South Africa's AB de Villiers against West Indies during the 2015 World Cup.
It also marks the third highest ODI score of a player hailing from an International Cricket Council member nation.
This remarkable innings included 16 sixes as well as four fours. The US climbed from 29-3 to 271-9 in their 50 overs.
India's born wicketkeeper batsman made his List A USA debut on 17th January 2017, just before the US was granted ODI status in 2019. Since then, he has made six T20 and seven international ODI appearances.
The United States won Monday's first match in the two-match series by seven wickets.
