India has cancelled Thursday's optional training session following another positive Covid-19 result from their coaching staff.

After fresh tests on Thursday morning, players were told to remain in their hotels. A spokesperson for India said that everyone is being tested frequently.

Ravi Shastri, the head coach, was positive in the fourth Test at The Oval. India won it by 157 runs.

India leads the five-Test series by 2-1.

After Shastri's positive, three other members of India's backroom staff were also isolated - fielding coach Ramakrishnan Sridhar, bowling coach Bharat Ashadhar, and Nitin Patel, physiotherapist.

External-link Indian media reported that the latest positive was in close touch with the players during the last Test.

The fifth and last Test will be held at Emirates Old Trafford, Friday. Players then leave immediately to take part in the rescheduled Indian Premier League, which takes place in the United Arab Emirates starting 19 September.

Jos Buttler, England's wicketkeeper, will be returning to the side following missing the fourth Test due to his second child. He said that the hosts were making preparations for the possibility of the game going ahead.

He said, "At the moment we're preparing for tomorrow - fingers crossed that the game will go forward."

"We don’t know enough to be truthful. It would be foolish to speculate on things I don't know.

"All is well in our camp, we trained well this morning.

Shastri's positive result was the first to be confirmed since the series started on August 4. However, India wicketkeeper Rishabh Pan and Dayanand Garani, Dayanand Garani, were positive before the series began.

England and India have been in different hotels, so their only contact has been on the playing field.
